Mrembo is a four-week educational program for young Tanzanian girls. It covers identity, belonging and purpose, puberty, menstruation, and menstrual management. Sessions use lectures, group discussions, questions and answers, educational activities, and practical demonstrations.
At Semba Secondary School in Ilemela, Mwanza, the project worked with 136 Form One girls. Students learned about puberty, the menstrual cycle, menstrual management, identity, belonging, and purpose. Practical activities included learning how to sew washable pads, and washable pads were distributed to all 136 participating students.
WUFT's tailoring and sewing skills training equips participants with practical vocational skills that can support income generation and greater economic independence. Training includes sewing-machine operation, pattern making, garment construction, and tailoring techniques.
The project ran from 3 August to 3 October 2023. Twenty-seven participants enrolled and 22 completed the program. The graduation was held on 14 October 2023. Participants also developed life skills including teamwork, time management, and financial literacy, and the project report records participants beginning to sell sewn products.
